some random goofs

Background for some items may be India

* Usually when I come back from work, my wife is already home, and so I do the calling bell. Sometimes we both come from outside, say after shopping, back to a locked home, and I would still do a calling bell, and then as I turn around would see my wife staring at me. Sometimes while coming from office, I try the key too, only to be reminded that its locked from inside...

*I do know of people who have tried their office swipe cards in shopping mall lifts, or even at their home doors. And indeed we know who used to give ID card instead of credit cards

* I wouldn't be surprised if some IT fellows in India would have tried a credit card.. and if that did not work, his sodexo food coupon, at a roadside tea-shop !

Missing things on car-roof...

So this is classic one. To buid up the background let me first share similar incidents from Maryland days.

It was in 2006 or so that we were driving for a hiking trip in Shanandoah valley. I stopped on a gas station to fill up gas in car. I paid with credit card and put the vallet and the card on the top of the car roof. Just before I got onto high way someone noticed my vallet on the car and stopped me by honking ferverously. I thanked him and God.

Two years later, Atul and I visited Virginia Beach. We did paragliding and all that. It was fun. Anyway, when we were packing our stuff for return trip Atul took my camera to catch the last picture. He put it back 'on the top of car trunk'. We drove out and after 5 min it occured to me to ask about camera. When I asked him if he put camera back in he said yes he put on the trunk. I guess he had told me to put inside and I didn't pay attention or whatever but we tried to find it by retracing our way back to parking lot. We never found it. More than camera, we lost nice memorable pictures. I swore that I will always take an image of my address and phone no. in my next camera so that if someone finds it he can send it back, but I never followed on it.

Anyway, two more years fast-forward and I am coming out of lab in Argonne Lab. Something didn't go well with experiment and I was agitated and couldn't take my mind off it. I reach in my pocket for car key and take out vallet and put it on car to open to door. I drove my car off with vallet still on car. Unfortunately, this time there was no one to notice it and I drove all the way to home. I never found it. I had to cancel all cards and get a new driving license. Now, driving license reminds me of another funny incident.

Very recently, I had a car accident because my car skidded in snow. We called police immediately. However, to my horror, I realized that I was not able to find my vallet with license in it the last night. Luckily, the accident happened one block away from home and I dashed to my apartment and was able to find vallet under study table within 10 min. I reached the accident scene just before police arrived. So the police officer gave me a ticket and asked me to appear in the court in 2 weeks. Apparently, he had kept my driving license. I never realized that he had kept it and when I came home I thought that I had lost my license. So I thought it would be very bad to appear in the court without a driving license so I applied for a new license. When I went to the court the judge dismissed me without any charges because there was no witness and "gave me my license back". I was disappointed that I had been disappointed over something I never lost. But, I am was also happy to have 2 licenses. In case I lose one again I don't have to get another:-)))

Another curious incident: I am fond of swiss knives because they are so during hiking and outdoor stuff. You can also open shipment boxes, beer and wine bottles and what not. I keep it in my key chain. However, everytime I travel by air I take my keys with me and security asks me dump it in front me. It has happened 3 times so far and everytime I got the same model from amazon. I will be very surprised if it ever happens again.... or may be not.
