Year 2000 . Prof 3-letter-initial (he was a favorite during those days) at IIT Chennai is teaching us some course - he is actually from humanities, teaching us a few classes of an elective.

In between the class he keeps asking students - "what is the time" ? "how much time left" ? etc. Students were confused, for he wore a watch. Is it not working ? But this happens everytime

He understood that students are curious, why in spite of a watch he keeps asking for time.

He explains: "You see, people have the habit of keeping your watch fast so that you are not late. But then since you know how fast your watch is, you mentally calculate back and again become late. So, everyday morning, I first set my watch as correct time. Then I close my eyes and fwd it randomly, so that I dont know how fast it is"

Brilliant, isn't it ? And then what does he do ? keep asking others for the right time.

Now you know why IITians like us are different.

This blog had 40,30,20 posts in the initial 3 years and I was hoping it will get 10 in the 4th and hit a 100 total !
That did not happen, it slowed down... and reaaally slowed down at 97 - I will post random 98 and 99. 100 who?
This is the 1980s... an old man was travelling in train for the first time... his children told him - papa, write down your ticket number somewhere so that even if u lose it, u can tell the number to TTE...

.
.
.

During travel , TTE comes, the man looks for his ticket, cant find it....  He tells the TTE .. "but I have written the ticket no: down" . TTE asks - tell me the number ?

the man goes: Oh I wrote it on the backside of the ticket..

rebirth at 80 and "humsuffer"

So this is post number 80, and the good news is that some old and current residents of 9006 turned 8309 are now feeling a bit nostalgic about this blog and one or some may soon join as new team members :-) ... hope that rejuvenates this, and that I, shock, can now be a reader for some time than a poster ( one who cooks- cooker ; one who posts - poster ; etc )

-----------------------------------------

before I leave, I wanted to record somewhere ( a bit of self bragging) about that wonderful game I invented while in 9006 and 8309 ... (actually more like while in Chetak)... the idea came up when we have 3 people in a car, and we can't really play team antakshari... So I came up with this brilliant patentable idea that one of us hums the tune of a song and the other two have to compete to guess the song ( Some of my ardent fans say that I can very well sing the lyrics itself, and the other two will still have to struggle to guess the song.... what a talented me !!)

anyways, this best-for-travel game later was played even in bigger crowds, and was aptly named "humsuffer"... the person who hums suffers, and not just him, everyone else suffers .. i.e in Hindi hum (sub) suffer

so sayonara for a while.. a man at eighty needs some rest :-) .. and good luck to the new posters !!

Bravo Don

(click on pic to enlrage)

As I saw the address on the letter lying on the table, I thought that was funny - "Bunnoose". But then, soon learnt that there was much more to it, on what was inside

The story goes as: Our man puts 75 cents in a vending machine in front of the Taco(h)ell on campus and the product came to the edge and did not fall down. He called up the number on the vending machine, wasted about 6 of his day time minutes to make the guy understand what happened..

and finally, in a packet with 39 cent stamps, came his well deserved refund, 3 quarter coins, and a form explaining the deal

Bravo Don ...both in your fights for justice and in your catching up on Atuls legacy.. way to go :-)

Atuls bhooth on Don

We have kept Don under observation for suspicion of Atuls bhooth having entered him - especially as stays in the same room... Don also burned a tavaa and like in atuls case, vishaal found out were the "burning smell" is coming from.. (well, some more, and he will catch up with atuls no:s) , like atul, he "accidentally" goes of to sleep in the couch upstairs, asking some one to wake him up in 15 mins (only to wake up the next day morning)...

and the latest... we got a pedometer (whatevere- that counts the no: of steps u take) with the cereal.. Don has clipped it on his neck and walking around all day every hour asking some one "Hey can u read the count?" ... "18" says the fellow.. "Yeah, its not working, I have been walking around from the morning, and only 18 ?"

Multipurpose laptop

Disclaimer: The following is NOT inspired by anyone else's action. It is purely an idea developed by yours truly. If any of the readers wants to lay claim for it, please post in the comments section your arguments, and how you hit upon the idea

Now for the main point. Here is a million dollar worth innovation. A multipurpose laptop or a laptop+digital weighing machine especially for all the dieting people !!

Imagine, how cool it would be, if you could just close and fold your laptop, and stand on it and it would measure your weight ! And not just that, automatically saves the data with a date and time stamp into a folder in the same latop !!

Soon to hit the market - watch out !

Lunch Combo

Contributed by Saurabh Jain
------------------------------

My roommate in CA (lets call him Raju) is a character as well. Since this blog is slowly starting to accomodate funny acts/conversations from people outside 9006, I am taking the liberty to add this conversation I had with Raju.

On a Sunday afternoon, we were dragging ourselves home after having lunch at an Indian Restaurant (a buffet ofcourse), ready to crash for a nice afternoon sleep. I was too busy dreaming how nice i will feel while I am crashing at home when I hear Raju saying:

"The restaurants should have some arrangement so that people can crash after lunch at the restaurant and then they should serve coffee after we wake up. They can call it Lunch Combo (Lunch + Sleep + Coffee)."

Microbio student proposes new theory

Okay, this is about a microbio student in the area, whom many of you might NOT know :-)
Call her P

In a friendly discussion, it came up once that other factors (like generation gap in age and life expectancy) being the same, a birth rate of 2 will keep the population constant. P says "No no, if you have birth rate of two, the population will double"

Her friends tried giving her an example. Assume A and B marry and C and D marry. Assume A and B have E anf F as kids and C and D have G and H. So 4 parents give 4 kids in all. So both generations have 4 people

P was so excited to prove her point that she goes "Yeah, but you see, then E has two kids, and F has two kids and so also G and H, and so that becomes 8 na "

What to do.. too much of bacteria and fungi !!

small bits

One more on the volleyball front : last week Vindo was asked by his teammates, what is the area that he wants to cover. Vindo waved his hand in circle and said "I will cover this much". To any sane person, that hand gesture covered not only his full court, part of the opposition court as well :-)

***************
relevant protion of a conversation

Atul : ....... from NY to Omaha.. from Omaha to CA

Vindo : Are you flying from Ohama to CA (no thats not my spelling mistake)

***************

Atul : Hey shock, are you going to the Indian store tomorrow ?

Shock : yeah, mostly

Atul : Can u buy rice for the house, we ran out of it

Shock : sure

shock's happy that atul has finally done something in terms of taking care of the house. gets two sacks the next day. Only to realise that there were already three sacks of rice that Vindo got the previous week !!

Such is what happens when everyone does opposite of what they are known to be experts at !

More Random Jokes

These have nothing to do with the characters of 9006 turned 8309 ....

Our PM Manmohan Singh has some amazing ways of pronouncing some words. After his meeting with Musharraf once, he told the media "We had a nice meeting and we made a giant statement" . MHz networks which aired it, had transcription of his speech, eventhough he was speaking in English, and they also wrote giant statement. What our man meant, in fact was "joined statement"

This is another of a true life incident that my advisor told me. A guy lost his Car keys once when he was at home. His roommates found it, but did not tell the fellow. Instead, they decided to play a trick. In the night they moved the car from where it was parked to some other place. The next day morning, the fellow got psyched. He went out somewhere (walking) and came back the car had again "moved" on its own !! I mentioned it here, because first thing I thought when I heard the losing key part was Atul. He stands a perfect candidate for this adventure. Only thing is , we the housemates will be the ones who will end up as fools.. as Atul will not notice that his car is "moving", even if we move it by substantial amounts every one hour .... !!

A Pleasant Surprise

Contributed by Saurabh Jain
-----------------------------

Sometimes even the most meticulous people can do a blunder....

December 2004, After my graduation I am moving to "LaLa Land" California for a job. My mallu friend's ever creative mind tells him, why not throw Saurabh a surprise farewell party. He takes pain (well not really, he just loves it) and write a few emails to quite a few common friends, convincing the guys (and girls ofcourse) to attend the party and make my day. Poor guys, most of 'em having final exam in a couple of days, couldn't say no to "The Shock" (would have definitely cursed me though).

Here comes the interesting part, excited shock knocks at my door asking me my email password. Its not that I don't trust him but you know....... its my email password...... After asking a zillion times, Shock tells me that he has sent me an email which I am not supposed to read so he wants to log in and delete that mail from my account.

Yes, he has included my email address also in the "Surprise Party" email which he sent to other people. Well I did got some idea as to whats going on but not to the extent it actually happened... It was great.

Moral of the Story: Every "Shock" has his day.

The blessed one

For a change, this is not about Atul !

There was Mr S, staying one month at 9006 in Vindo's room when Vindo was in India ..

You can't see Mr S without a beer bottle in one hand and a cigarrette in the other... One day he even fell sick as he did not have his usual quota of drink

The standard joke in 9006 about such characters was this.. when their parents blessed their son, instead of saying "Jeethe Raho", by mistake they said "Peethe Raho" !!
